Touching Africa Zambia has launched "The widow & orphan programme" as soon as it was possible, but it wasn't easy...
You can imagine our joy when AFGRI, a South African agricultural group, became involved by delivering a donation of 180 bags of maize (9 tons!) enabling us to launch additional programmes during a very severe time of intense drought and famine.
Since the Liseli Farms project has seen the light, the contribution has become bigger, and current projects are sustained, but they are still very small in the face of such extreme need.
THE FEEDING PROGRAM
Every Sunday, a solid meal of maize porridge and sauce (beans, tomato-relish, etc) is served for the young children of surrounding villages, who suffer most from malnutrition. Some have to walk up to 20km, which proves how hungry they are!
THE WIDOW & ORPHAN PROGRAM
Via local church groups, portions of maize are distributed to the elderly and the orphans.
WORK FOR FOOD PROGRAM
A team consisting of 5 adults come to work on Liseli Farms, cleaning fields, etc. At the end of the day they leave with a bag of maize that they share between them.
